The Emergency and Infectious Disease Center (EIDC) at Imo State University Teaching Hospital (IMSUTH) is a key health facility dedicated to rapid, high-quality emergency care and the management of infectious diseases for patients from across Imo State and the South-East region.
The center delivers 24/7 emergency services — covering trauma, acute medical and surgical cases, obstetric emergencies, and other critical conditions — driven by a skilled multidisciplinary team and efficient triage systems.
In response to public health challenges, especially the COVID-19 pandemic, Seplat Energy and its joint venture partner, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) commenced construction of a permanent 150–200 bed Emergency and Infectious Diseases Hospital within the IMSUTH complex at Orlu in June 2020, significantly strengthening the hospital’s capacity to serve the region. This facility forms part of a nationwide initiative to enhance healthcare delivery and infectious disease response across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.
Through dedicated infectious disease services — including diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and surveillance — EIDC supports the control of illnesses such as malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, viral hepatitis, and other communicable diseases. The center also emphasizes strict infection prevention protocols and dedicated isolation care to ensure patient and staff safety.
Beyond clinical care, the EIDC serves as a hub for training, research, and community health education, contributing to stronger health systems, public awareness, and better emergency outcomes.
The Emergency and Infectious Disease Center remains a pivotal part of IMSUTH’s mission to provide accessible, responsive, and life-saving healthcare for all.
